Growing up as an Israeli Muslim in a Bedouin family, Ishmael “Ish” Khaldi wanted to be a farmer. After two of his close friends were killed during their police service, Ish made a personal commitment to serve the country of Israel. Listen to Ish as he sits down with Steven Shalowitz to discuss his upbringing, values, and career as a diplomat.


Ishmael “Ish” Khaldi has a remarkable life story to tell, which he recounted in his book “A Shephard’s Journey”. The third of 11 children, he was brought up in a tent in Northern Israel until the age of eight. Ish was a stellar student and went on to get his BA in Political Science from Haifa University and his MA in International Relations from Tel Aviv University. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as Vice Counsel at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco and was Consular for Civil Society Affairs at the Israeli Embassy in London. He alsoserved as Policy Advisor to former Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman and was recently appointed Israel’s Ambassador to Eritrea in the Horn of Africa.
