JNF-USA Hosts Elegant Soiree to Welcome New Consul General of Israel to New York

NEW YORK, N.Y., November 4, 2021 — On Thursday, October 28, 2021, Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) hosted an intimate cocktail reception for close to 100 major donors from the Tri-state region to welcome Ambassador Asaf Zamir into his new role as Consul General of Israel to New York. Zamir began working as the Consul General in mid-October and will be providing support for several other states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Delaware.

JNF-USA’s IsraelCast host, Steven Shalowitz, sat down with Ambassador Zamir for a live Q&A at the Ronald S. Lauder JNF House in Manhattan to learn more about his background, what he hopes to accomplish, and his message for the American-Jewish community of “cheerleaders” for the land and people of Israel. Prior to his role as Consul General, Ambassador Zamir served as the Deputy Mayor of the Tel Aviv City Council where he promoted and implemented many programs, including those related to affordable housing, public transportation, education equality, civil rights for minorities and the refugee community, as well as being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Tel Aviv/Yafo.

In May 2020, with the formation of the national unity government, Zamir was appointed Minister of Tourism. Later that year, he resigned and in 2021, new Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, appointed Ambassador Zamir as Israel’s Consul General to New York.
