CARLSBAD, Calif., September 15, 2025 — Nearly two dozen families from across the country recently united at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., for Jewish National Fund-USA’s “Your Jewish Roots…Our Jewish Future,” multigenerational retreat, where participants strengthened their family bonds while deepening their connection to the land and people of Israel.
Co-chaired by philanthropists Jill and Fred Lewis, the retreat featured a rich lineup of workshops, spiritual moments, and storytelling sessions that emphasized heritage, pride, and action.
“This retreat was a celebration of Jewish continuity and connection,” said Event Co-chair Fred Lewis. “From intimate family moments to powerful communal learning, every session reminded us that our past and future are intertwined, with Israel as a core component of our shared Jewish identity.”

A highlight was a keynote conversation between Rachel Lewis, whose parents co-chaired the retreat, and Jonah Platt, the host of the podcast “Being Jewish with Jonah Platt,” and one of the most trusted voices on Jewish identity, culture, and current events. Attendees also heard from Jewish National Fund-USA President Deb Lust Zaluda and Chairman Dr. Sol Lizerbram, who spoke about how the organization is developing Israel’s North and South through its Build Together and Reimagine plans.
“We’re not just creating programs,” said Zaluda, highlighting Jewish National Fund-USA initiatives that support culinary innovation, agriculture and water technology, and employment opportunities. “We’re building entrepreneurial communities while rebuilding and reimagining Israel’s North and South post-October 7, all while reclaiming our Zionist narrative.”

Other session highlights included topics such as learning how to put Jewish values into action, ways to improve mental health and mindfulness, and a fascinating family history exploration with genealogist Ellen Kowitt, who guided participants in uncovering and preserving their personal Jewish narratives.
From Torah yoga in the morning to Havdalah under the stars, each experience was designed to connect mind, body, and spirit while strengthening the bonds between generations and their shared connection to Israel.
"When we bring generations together under one roof, we’re not just sharing stories,” said Event Co-chair Jill Lewis. “We’re building the next chapter of the Jewish People’s story. This retreat is a powerful reminder that Zionism lives in every generation, and it’s our responsibility to nurture it.”
