Jewish National Fund-USA Delivers Food to Families for Rosh Hashanah

New York, NY., September 2, 2021 — In the lead-up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) delivered over 15,000 packages of food to families in need across Israel, including those in Akko, Be’er Sheva, and Kiryat Shmona, through its MAKOM Pioneers affiliate.

MAKOM is a coalition of communities focused on empowering and revitalizing their towns and villages in the Negev and Galilee. They are the largest national organization in Israel that brings together individuals and groups from all sectors of society to share knowledge, collaborate on initiatives, create dialogue amongst diverse populations, and work together to promote society as a whole.

Chair of JNF-USA MAKOM Task Force Beth Banks Cohn said: “At this special time of year it is once again our privilege to support MAKOM Communities as they provide food packages to families for Rosh Hashana. MAKOM Communities build from within, fulfilling societal needs as they create strength and resilience. The food pantries are a great example of that.  MAKOM's food pantries were born out of community needs and continue to support Israelis from all sectors of society as they get back on their feet after the pandemic.”

MAKOM Community Pioneers believe that by creating a society of people that initiate, engage, and involve themselves as local leaders, they enhance and strengthen the social fabric of Israel. And their aid comes at a time when many in Israel require assistance. Almost 1 million Israelis have lost their jobs or have been furloughed due to the pandemic, and thousands of individuals and families are unable to put food on their tables on a daily basis.

Each food package from MAKOM includes: oil, cans of tuna, two kinds of pasta, rice, coffee, ketchup, sugar, flour, powdered chocolate milk, tomato sauce, a can of corn, chocolate spread, cornflakes, powdered soup mix, chocolate, potato chips, one type of fruit, five different vegetables, and one chicken.
